| Dear Parent, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about my appointment as the new principal at Gadsden Elementary School for the 2010-2011 school year. Mrs. Carmelann Barry and I will be working in conjunction until the end of this school year to ensure a smooth transition. I feel fortunate to be joining a school culture focused on student learning, collaboration, and commitment to high expectations. It is my intention to continue with these important practices and traditions along with innovations that will ensure our students ultimate success.
Let me share some information about my educational background and professional experience. After graduating from Northern Arizona University (NAU) with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, I began my teaching career at Gadsden Elementary School as a sixth grade teacher. I taught here for two years before becoming a teacher-on-assignment at Arizona Desert Elementary School for one year. Between August 2002 and August 2005 I served as the special education director for our school district. During this time I completed my graduate studies at NAU in Human Resources, Educational Leadership, and Special Education. Between August 2005 and October 2009 I served as the Principal of Desert View Elementary School. By the end of this May, I will attain an Educational Specialist Degree in Bilingual School Psychology from The University of Arizona.
I have begun meeting with the staff and have reviewed data to learn more about the unique strengths, practices, and traditions of Gadsden Elementary School. With my “open door” policy, I believe you will find me to be open, fair, and compassionate. I look forward to meeting the Gadsden families and earning your trust and respect. I know that together we can take our school to “Performing Plus” and beyond.
Respectfully,
Jose J. Ureña
