| Seven Schools Earn Performing Plus Status
The 2009-2010 school year brought positive program opportunities for our students. Our main goal for the 2009-2010 school year was to achieve performing status or above with AZ-LEARNS. The results are now final with seven of our schools achieving a Performing Plus Status. The schools receiving this label are: Rio Colorado Elementary, Arizona Desert Elementary, San Luis Middle School, Desert View Elementary, Cesar Chavez Elementary, Ed Pastor Elementary and Southwest Junior High. Gadsden Elementary received a Performing Label.
Once again, Ed Pastor met the Federal AYP criteria.
Two middle schools are now operating as 21st Century Community Learning Centers, providing many afterschool programs for our students. 21st Century Programs were approved for four of our six elementary schools for the next five years. Our partnership with Arizona State University continues to grow with Southwest Junior High and Ed Pastor Elementary School participating in a TAP, pay for performance program. The remaining six schools will participate during the 2011-2012 school year. Seventh and eighth grade students received over $200,000 in scholarship money this summer to attend universities across the United States. A fifth grade team from Ed Pastor Elementary participated in the Odyssey of the Mind World Level Competition this Spring in Michigan. Close to 120 Gadsden Marching Band Students participated in the Disneyland Parade in June under the supervision of Martin Peralta Sr., Martin Peralta Jr., Mr. Mario Hernandez, and Mr. Felix Armenta.
Thank you San Luis Community. Our parents with the help of the entire community raised over $17,000 to send our marching band to Disneyland where our students enjoyed two days at the resort after marching in the Disneyland Parade. Parents at Ed Pastor Raised over $10,000 to send a team to Odyssey of the Mind World Competition in Michigan.
Over the last two years, more than 1,800 students learning English were classified as English Fluent as a result of the efforts of our personnel and the new English Language Block in our schools. Over the last ten years the percentage of English Language Learners has dropped from 99% to 50% of the total student population. Students proficient in English generally perform well in AIMS testing. Presently our student enrollment is slightly over 5,000 students.

I am very proud to be part of this energizing and productive school year. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alma M. Sandigo. I have been in education for more than 13 years as a primary teacher and as an ELL Coordinator. This year nonetheless, I have been given the honor to join the team of Desert View as the NCLB Mentor. I have pledged to support teachers in their instruction and students in their academic well being; especially as we implement the new District Transformational Reading Program. In the short time I have been here, I have learned that the school counts with a strong leadership, effective and hardworking teachers, resourceful staff, willing to learn students and supportive parents. That is all we need to continue being successful. I am looking forward to sharing a very eventful year with you while we work alongside.
“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success.” Henry Ford
